Luka works as a Cyber Security Consultant at Cuccibu. As a child, he was very interested in ‘hacking’ devices and computer games. It was obvious that he wanted to do something with IT and went to the technical high school. Luka says: “During my education at the technical high school in Croatia, I learned all about hardware. Later, I came to the Netherlands to study infrastructure. On this education I found out that there was also a study for Cyber Security Specialist. That is what I started doing. I met Fady at this school, who was already working at Cuccibu and he introduced me there. Now we work together as colleagues and can jointly apply our skills at different clients.”
What kind of assignments do you carry out for our clients?
“The work we perform as Cyber Security Consultants for clients is very diverse. Which makes the work very interesting! I work on all aspects of IT: from testing a web application to the entire infrastructure. Every test we do has the same goal, which is to find vulnerabilities and ways to work around the system. What I enjoy the most is conducting a penetration test!” says Luka. A penetration test is a simulated cyber-attack on, a component of, an organization’s IT environment. During a penetration test we are looking for vulnerabilities, which could be abused in reality to infiltrate an environment. He continues: “It is a challenge to find all possible vulnerabilities. In a report, we state our findings and indicate the severity and potential risk factors of the vulnerabilities. We also share some key-points to mitigate the risks. It is cool to see that organizations take my knowledge and expertise seriously and become more aware of the importance of Cyber Security through our work.”
What characterizes a Cyber Security Consultant?
Luka says: “The most important thing is that a Cyber Security Consultant has the right mindset. Anyone can learn the technical aspects, but the right mindset makes the difference between good and bad. We hack to help organizations and not to harm them. That is an important difference. In addition, you need to be curious, creative and patient. Every organization is different and you have to be able to adapt. Sometimes you have to take the longer route to reach your goal. As a Cyber Security Consultant, you have to come up with different ways, for example, to enter a system of building. In doing so, you have to dare to think outside the box and not always take the most obvious route.”
What is the biggest challenge in Cyber Security ?
Nowadays, organizations are increasingly dependent on IT systems. Experience shows that most organizations only pay attention to Cyber Security when something has happened. Luka: “That is a wrong approach in the digital age we live in. Cyber Security is a must. If you are wondering when you are going to need it, you’re already too late. It Is therefore very important to create awareness about Cyber Security within all layers of the organization. It is not the digital world we live in that is the biggest risk, but mainly the people using it. An organization can have all kinds of technical measures in place to keep phishing e-mails out as much as possible, but when such e-mail does enter the system and one of the employees clicks on a link, it can endanger the organization’s entire network. That, as far as I am concerned, is where the biggest challenge for organizations in terms of Cyber Security lies. I find it interesting to combine the technical and personal aspects and ensure that time is also spent on awareness within an organization. At Cuccibu, we have various options for creating awareness such as providing a ‘Meet the Hacker’ session or setting up a phishing campaign.”
How do you experience working at Cuccibu?
“Cuccibu feels like one big family! Every colleague has his or her own qualities. For example, Jeffry is good at programming, Fady is very handy with web applications and I have a lot of technical skills in infrastructure and pentesting. We reinforce each other and enjoy working together. In addition, the atmosphere in the office is very good. Beside working hard, we have fun together and there is room for good conversations. This makes us even more successful in what we do.”
