Fady has been working as a Cyber Security Consultant at Cuccibu for some time now. He has had a huge interest in computers form an early age. Fady says: “At the age of 12, I was one of the few in my school to have my own computer. I became increasingly interested in these devices and slowly made the step into the IT world. So a logical next step was to study Cyber Security Specialist.”
What makes the field of Cyber Security so interesting?
Fady begins enthusiastically: “The best thing about Cyber Security is that you get to hack legally and in most cases you actually find a vulnerability. There is a quote that goes like: ‘If you spend enough time, there is nothing unhackable.’ I gladly accept that challenge! Our experience shows that you can hack almost any system involving human interaction. People simply make mistakes, for example by clicking on a corrupted link, and that is often the way for hackers to get into a system. The hacking itself is fun, but even more fun is that our work as a Cyber Security Consultant allows us to really help organizations. We can address their questions, help improve the security of their IT systems and create awareness.”
Wat does your work as a Cyber Security Consultant include?
“Our job as a Cyber Security Consultant is very diverse and never boring. My assignment is to look for vulnerabilities within an organization’s IT structure. This can be through a web application pentest, a network pentest, a physical pentest but also a phishing test or a malware analysis. Basically all kinds of offensive and defensive Cyber Security tests.’ says Fady. Fady’s work is focused on so-called redteaming. Redteaming is simulating an attack on an organization, as hackers perform it, with the aim of testing the overall security of an organization. It combines all offensive Cyber Security techniques into one. Fady continues: ‘Redteaming is the total package of services in the context of proactive security. Recently, together with Luka, I conducted a mystery visit at one of our clients as part of redteaming. It is fun to take on a different role each time. We enter the facilities in different ways. Once we pretented to be a mechanic. But we have also pretented to be an IT manager sending a phishing email to the receptionist that we were coming by. Step by step, we try to take control of all systems. In doing so, we not only look at where the danger is online, but also test an organization’s physical security. Afterwards, we issue an advisory report. This contains all our findings, translated into a concrete business risk with advice on how best to mitigate this risk.”
What qualities does a good Cyber Security Consultant need?
Fady says: “As a Cyber Security Consultant, I have an extremely creative job. You need to be able to think out-of-the-box. If you think within the box, you will only use the system as it is. If you think creatively then you can convert the system to what you want. A funny example: imagine an office with sliding doors that open on sensor from the inside. If the door is closed from the outside, most people will ring the bell. A logical step. We think a step further. Because how do you get the door open without ringing the bell? By providing movement on the inside. We slid a foil balloon inside and inflated it from outside. The sensor detected movement and the sliding door opened. This shows that as a Cyber Security Consultant, you think creatively and dare to think outside the box. Besides, curiosity also helps when looking for vulnerabilities. It is also helpful if you enjoy sharing your knowledge with others. In short, a good Cyber Security Consultant is creative, curious and likes to share knowledge.”
How is the cooperation with colleagues at Cuccibu?
In assignments, Fady works a lot with Cyber Security Consultant Luka: “Working together with Luka is great! We always have a clear idea of the goal of our assignment and make sure we achieve it within the agreed timeframe. This also applies to cooperation with other colleagues, both from the Cyber Security team and beyond. Cuccibu is a nice organization to work for, with pleasant colleagues who are always ready to help.”
