Privacy Officer
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) imposes a variety of obligations on companies. It applies to the entire company, as well as to its structure and how it handles data. A Data Protection Officer supervises (see DPO) while a Privacy Officer (PO) takes charge, builds the privacy organisation and takes a company’s data processing operations to the next level.
A company appoints a Privacy Officer (large companies may even appoint multiple Officers or set up a Privacy Office) to formulate and implement privacy policies.
What does a Privacy Officer do?
Privacy applies to the entire company; every employee processes personal data. This means that the company needs frameworks, policies and processes based on those frameworks and policy principles. This is where the Privacy Officer comes in. The Privacy Officer’s job is to establish a privacy policy – in collaboration with and tailored to the company – in order to provide data processing frameworks. The Privacy Officer is in charge of policy implementation and coordinates the privacy organisation. Depending on the size of the company, the Privacy Officer will also take a hands-on approach to privacy-related issues, like carrying out DPIAs and handling internal privacy queries or data breaches.
Larger companies often take a decentralised approach with (for example) privacy ambassadors for different departments. Coordinating this decentralised approach is also part of the Privacy Officer’s duties and this requires knowledge of the company and a high degree of organisational sensitivity.
Our Privacy Officer services
Cuccibu fulfils the role of Privacy Officer for many companies, including government agencies, healthcare institutions, educational and care organisations, as well as commercial organisations and start-ups. Cuccibu can do this on an interim basis, for example as a temporary replacement or as a coordinator, but also on a more permanent basis. In the latter case, we would apply our PO as a Service, which would completely unburden your company in terms of filling the Privacy Officer role or we could even set up your Privacy Office. Our Privacy Consultants are experienced in pragmatically filling the PO role while still paying attention to the business objectives and added value.
As the Privacy Officer is often the role that builds the company, we can also perform a mandate on a project basis, or on an obligation-of-result basis, for example in the form of a Privacy Project Leader. This role can take the company to a certain level or set up the entire privacy organisation.
Not interested in a fixed position? Cuccibu can also act as a remote Privacy Officer: in that case, we would assume a yet to be determined number of hours per month during which you can send questions to a Cuccibu contact if the need arises. Additional support will be on standby.
